The detection, prevention and investigation of acts of international and domestic terrorism stand at the forefront of the FBI's broad investigative mission to serve and protect the citizens of the United States while faithfully upholding the U.S. Constitution and laws. The FBI is both an intelligence and law enforcement agency. In furtherance of this effort, the Norfolk FBI created the Tidewater Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), which is made up of representatives from various local, state, and federal civilian and military agencies. The Tidewater JTTF's mission includes enhancing local intelligence gathering, including the sharing of appropriate intelligence; gathering and investigating leads; and assisting in any prosecutive efforts. The FBI is grateful for the representation provided by major local police departments, as well as by our state and federal partners.
The FBI holds broad federal investigative authority, and it has adopted a strategic approach which stresses long-term, complex investigations. The FBI's investigative philosophy also emphasizes close relations and information sharing with other federal, state, local, and law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The FBI further strengthened its investigative and intelligence-sharing components by creating the Field Intelligence Group.
In addition to the FBI's responsibilities in terrorism matters, the Norfolk FBI Office also conducts investigations involving foreign counterintelligence; organized crime; white-collar crime, including public corruption, financial institution fraud, fraud against the government, health care fraud, intellectual property crime, bankruptcy fraud, telemarketing fraud and insurance fraud; cybercrime; civil rights violations; extortion; kidnapping; air piracy; interstate criminal activity; fugitives; drug trafficking matters, and other violations of federal statutes.
The Norfolk Division of the FBI is fully committed to the FBI'S TOP TEN PRIORITIES. Within that framework, these priorities are addressed through several investigative programs. To learn more about the Norfolk Division's investigative programs, click on the representative links below.
