The Norfolk Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is pleased to announce that Alex J. Turner has reported as the new Special Agent in Charge (SAC) as a result of his appointment by FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III. As SAC of the Norfolk FBI Office, Mr. Turner will also oversee the Tidewater Joint Terrorism Task Force. Alex J. Turner was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma, in 1956. As an Air Force dependent, he lived most of his formative years in numerous parts of the United States and Europe. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology in 1980. In 1981, he began his law enforcement career as a Patrol Officer for the Greenbelt City Police Department, Greenbelt, Maryland, and later was promoted to the position of Criminal Detective. Mr. Turner was sworn in as a Special Agent of the FBI on January 6, 1985. Upon completing New Agent Training at Quantico, Mr. Turner began his FBI career in the Atlanta Division. He was assigned to the Atlanta Division General Property Crime Squad and later to the Drug Squad. Between 1985 and 1987, Mr. Turner frequently served as an undercover agent for the Atlanta Division and for other field offices of the FBI. In 1988, he was assigned to manage the Atlanta Multi-Agency Gang Task Force, which addressed violent Jamaican Posses and other violent street gangs. In 1992, Mr. Turner established and supervised the Atlanta Regional Drug Intelligence Squad, which was tasked to develop and manage drug intelligence for FBI field offices in the southeast region of the United States. In 1995, he was promoted and assigned to the Administrative Summary Unit, Administrative Division, FBI Headquarters, where he handled the adjudication of serious internal disciplinary matters. In 1997, Mr. Turner was reassigned to the Atlanta Division where he supervised the Atlanta Drug Squad and later the General Property Crime Squad. In November 2000, Mr. Turner was promoted and assigned to the Washington Field Office as an Assistant Special Agent in Charge. At various times during this assignment, he managed the Technical Services, White Collar Crime, Public Corruption, Cyber, Criminal Intelligence, Violent Crime, Criminal Enterprise, Asset Forfeiture, and Criminal Informant Programs. From March 2005 through October 2005, Mr. Turner was temporarily detailed to the Criminal Investigative Division, FBI Headquarters, to establish the National Gang Intelligence Center. In January 2006, Mr. Turner assumed the duties of Section Chief for the Gang/Criminal Enterprise Section at FBIHQ, where he oversaw national-level program management for the FBI's Violent Gang, Drug, and Major Theft Investigative Programs. In January 2008, Mr. Turner reported as the Special Agent in Charge of the Norfolk Division. Mr. Turner said he was honored to be selected for this position, and he looks forward to working with law enforcement, military and intelligence partners in the area to serve the Hampton Roads community and the nation. Mr. Turner is married with two children. Mr. Turner’s predecessor, Cassandra M. Chandler, retired in December to take a position in the private sector.
