Statement from FBI Norfolk Division Regarding the Recipient of the 2007 Director’s Community Leadership Award

The Norfolk Division of the FBI is pleased to announce that Mrs. Jane G. Cabarrus is the recipient of the 2007 Director’s Community Leadership Award. Annually, each of the 56 FBI Field Offices nationwide presents this award to one individual who has exhibited exemplary leadership within the community and whose leadership has assisted the FBI and local law enforcement personnel in making safer communities.

Mrs. Cabarrus is the president of the Northampton County Branch NAACP on the Virginia Eastern Shore, a position she has held since 1989. She is also the vice president of the Virginia State Conference for the NAACP, where she serves as Chairwoman of the Health Committee. She is well known for her community outreach efforts, particularly in the areas of crime, drugs, gangs, violence prevention and education. Her exceptional achievements in these areas have made a significant impact within her community on the Virginia Eastern Shore.

Mrs. Cabarrus has long been concerned about the many negative influences which hinder our youth from becoming productive citizens, and she has organized programs to address such issues. She is an active member of the Safe Kids Coalition and has served on educational committees such as the National Back-To-School, Stay in School, and the Northampton High School Multicultural Task Force.

Her dedication to improving the quality of life for individuals on the Eastern Shore is demonstrated by her participation in many community outreach organizations, which include: advisory board member of the Virginia of Office of Minority Health, Richmond, Virginia; liaison coordinator for outreach services for the Sickle Cell Association, Inc; board member of Bayview Citizens for Social Justice; Eastern Virginia chair for LIFENET; member of the Multicultural Educational Task Force; and member of the Superintendent's Advisory Committee for Northampton County Public Schools.

Assistant Special Agent in Charge James P. Myers and Community Outreach Specialist, Special Agent William L. Jackson, both from the FBI Norfolk Division, will formally present Mrs. Cabarrus with this award on Friday, February 1, 2008 , at 6:30 p.m. at Giddens Do-Drop Inn, 8204 Bayford Road , Weirwood , Virginia .

Press and media members are invited to attend.
