Norfolk FBI Citizens' Academy

Citizen's Academy logo

The Norfolk FBI Office holds a Citizens' Academy each year. The eight sessions are designed to introduce the participants to the work and responsibilities of the FBI, with special attention to the Norfolk FBI Office.

The sessions are held in the evening at the Norfolk FBI Office, 150 Corporate Boulevard, Norfolk, Virginia. Presentations by FBI Agents and other personnel include such topics as:

  • The FBI’s priorities
  • International and Domestic Terrorism Programs, including case studies;
  • Counterintelligence Program;
  • Cyber Crime, Corruption, and other White Collar Crime Program matters, including case studies;
  • Criminal Enterprises, Violent Crime, and Drug Programs, including case studies;
  • Civil Rights/Hate Crimes Program;
  • Recruitment and Hiring; and the Victim/Witness Program.

Presentations are also made by many of the Norfolk FBI's specialty teams such as Specialized Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Evidence Response Team (ERT), and Hazardous

Materials Response Team (HMRT).

The members of the Citizen’s Academy participate in a Firearms Day which includes an FBI SWAT Team demonstration and provides attendees with the opportunity to experience firing weapons that are utilized by FBI Special Agents.

The Citizens' Academy culminates with a tour of the FBI Academy at Quantico, VA. Attendees receive presentations from a number of Academy personnel, to include members of the FBI's Crime Lab and the Hostage Rescue Team. The tour concludes with Citizens' Academy personnel taking a "spin" on the FBI's Tactical Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (TEVOC). The Special Agent in Charge (SAC) presides over a dinner and graduation ceremony in which attendees are awarded certificates of completion.

The SAC selects the participants. Each class is comprised of community, business, and civic leaders who are, and will remain, active in their areas of assistance. The FBI Norfolk Citizens’ Academy Alumni Association (FBI NORCAAA) was established in 2007. Participants must undergo a thorough background investigation because the curriculum covers investigative techniques that are used in national security and criminal investigations.
